Coronavirus patient’s recovery after 20 days on ventilator is a welcome boost for doctors

Carson resident Ramon Zuniga — who spent 28 days in the intensive care unit, 20 of them in a coma on a ventilator — went home from Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance on Easter Sunday. Zuniga’s story renewed hope, said Dr. Alex Hakim, who oversaw Zuniga’s treatment while in the ICU. Watching Zuniga roll through the lobby and out the hospital’s doors, surrounded by the ebullient medical team, was “powerful and cathartic,” he said.
