"Our goal is to ensure patients receive the medical stabilization they need and are connected to ongoing treatment for a smoother path to recovery." — Newman Wheeler, Chief Administrative Officer of Levelland Covenant Health successfully launched the One-Eighty program at Covenant Health Levelland in Fall 2024, providing a critical new resource for individuals experiencing acute withdrawal from alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications. This innovative hospital-based inpatient service offers voluntary medical stabilization in a safe, supportive environment — filling a significant gap identified in the region's community health assessment, where substance abuse emerged as a pressing concern. Early results demonstrate strong impact. In December alone, five patients were served, with four more receiving care the following month. Notably, all patients have traveled from outside Hockley County — including across West Texas and New Mexico — underscoring the program's broad regional reach. Led by Hospitalist Dr. MuMing Chen, the program provides a typical three-day inpatient stay focused on medical stabilization, comprehensive discharge planning, and seamless transition to long-term treatment. A dedicated on- site coordinator works one-on-one with each patient to secure placement at the appropriate treatment facility. Medicaid, Medicare, most commercial insurance plans, and private pay are accepted. Patients have expressed deep appreciation for the empathy and compassion demonstrated by Dr. Chen, One-Eighty Service Coordinator Vanessa Leos, and the nursing team — reflecting Covenant Health's commitment to whole-person care. Expanding our epilepsy program with the addition of a breakthrough technology, Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS) Covenant Health is proud to announce the expansion of our epilepsy program with the addition of Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS), a breakthrough technology for patients with hard- to-control epilepsy. Led by Neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Scranton and Neurologist Dr. Tulio Bueso, RNS continuously monitors brain activity, detects early signs of a seizure, and delivers gentle electrical stimulation to help prevent it before it starts. This cutting- edge treatment, combined with an individualized care approach, improves seizure control and enhances quality of life for patients. Covenant Medical Center is the only hospital in the region offering both RNS and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), bringing advanced neurological care to West Texas and eastern New Mexico.
