Covenant Health has once again brought critically needed care back to West Texas with the launch of the region's only kidney transplant surgery program at Covenant Medical Center. Developed in partnership with Texas Tech Physicians and led by transplant surgeon and program director Dr. Lynsey Biondi, the program provides life-changing treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease and chronic kidney conditions — eliminating the long travel and extended wait times many families previously faced. The first transplant was successfully performed on April 7. The patient, a man in his 40s, is now off dialysis, has normal kidney function, and is recovering well. Fully approved and accredited by the federal government and OPTN/UNOS, the program is supported by a comprehensive transplant team including physicians, nurses, social workers, a pharmacist, a dietitian, and a financial counselor — ensuring seamless, compassionate care from evaluation through recovery. By restoring advanced transplant services to the South Plains, Covenant Health is not just expanding access — we are restoring hope, improving outcomes, and strengthening the future of care across our region. "West Texas faces one of the highest rates of kidney failure in the nation. Our team is honored to bring this life-changing surgery to our community. This is just the beginning." — Lynsey Biondi, M.D., Kidney Transplant and Program Director Restoring Hope Close to Home: West Texas' Only Kidney Transplant Program Another Story?
