SJO Symposiums: Learning Journeys Managing Agitation in the Hospital Setting — Sept.-Nov. 2024 Caregivers working in high-risk areas learned about the anatomy of behavior escalation and recognizing violence-predicting factors at this inaugural class. A seasoned psych nurse facilitator discussed effective communication skills and strategies for risk mitigation. Becoming a Stroke Superhero December 12, 2024 Designed to equip nurses with essential stroke care techniques for patients. This inaugural class included a combination of theoretical learning and practical application and explored the latest evidence-based practices in stroke management. The Neuro Science Symposium August 23, 2024 This 4-hour, CE-granting symposium included discussions regarding the latest management options in cerebrovascular disorders such as seizures and delirium, targeted temperature management and therapeutic hypothermia, multi-modal approaches to caring for comprised patients after cardiac arrest, and current stroke care guidelines and goals of care. 19th annual Evidence-Based Practice & Magnet Conference - There's No Place Like St. Joe's — October 18, 2024 Nurses followed the yellow brick road to a Wizard of Oz-themed Evidence-Based Practice Magnet conference in November 2024. Educational topics included capnography application, presented by Tom Ahrens, MD; Evidence-Based Practice and You, presented by Trish Saul, PhD; Caring Science and the Art of Caring, presented by Caritas Chris Griffin, PhD; and Millennial Nurses Experience High Burnout and Turnover Risk During Pandemic, presented by Dana Rutledge, PhD. Best practices and work culture were highlighted through the journey to Beacon Award presentation, delving into the elements of Magnet metrics, and reflecting on vulnerable patient populations considering how implicit bias may impact care of these patients. Nurse teams competed in an escape-room activity to prepare for our upcoming Magnet site visit, heard about several Council achievements, and were also able to view several posters on display in the courtyard. Cardiovascular Symposium — November 8, 2024 This 4-hour CE-granting symposium covered the latest management options and innovations in cardiovascular disorders, goals of care, core measures, and provided an update on essential topics in cardiology.
