10 | Health Matters: Providence St. Mary Medical Center A braham Lincoln once famously said, "In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." With the population of older Americans growing each year and people living longer than ever, it's important to focus on what we can do to age well and enjoy life at every stage. As more older adults choose to retire in the High Desert, the importance of providing exceptional care to an advanced population also grows. Michael Whitmore, DO, practices internal medicine at the Providence 65+ Health Center in Apple Valley, where he focuses on the aging community. With his practice located just five minutes from senior living communities like Jess Ranch, Whitmore says he sees many patients whose mostly sedentary lives contribute to the health issues they face as they get older. "The number one thing people can do to remain healthy as they age is to stay active," says Dr. Whitmore. "The old saying 'If you don't use it, you lose it' is true. And, unfortunately, often when patients lose their mobility, they lose their independence." The biggest health concerns the doctor treats are obesity, diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, arthritis and chronic back pain. Dr. Whitmore encourages his patients to be more active by participating in classes offered by a Providence 65+ program called Senior Select. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE PROGRAMS Classes such as yoga and aerobics are designed for seniors to work on improving their movement, balance and stamina. "It's easier than joining a gym, where they may feel out of place," explains Dr. Whitmore. "All the people are close in age, and the classes are designed for what they are able to handle." The program also offers social gatherings for card games, bingo, mahjong and movies. Dr. Whitmore says that his thriving patients also lead active social lives. They generally have a more positive outlook on life and look forward to the next day and the future. "The ones who are doing the worst are those who have isolated themselves," he says. "When seniors are participating in activities and engaging with other people, they're not only improving their health, they're having fun, too." Age Is Just a Number A special Providence program helps seniors stay active and healthy. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PATIENTS WHO ARE 65+ • See a primary care physician at least once a year • Have a full panel of labs plus a physical exam • Get eye and dental exams regularly • Keep up with any prescribed medications and tell your doctor if you experience any side effects.
