2 | Health Matters: Providence St. Joseph Hospital FIRST DUAL- CHAMBER LEADLESS PACEMAKER ON WEST COAST IMPLANTED AT PROVIDENCE ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL ORANGE. Brian Kim, MD, a heart specialist at Providence St. Joseph, successfully implanted a first-of-its-kind wireless pacemaker that controls both heart chambers using synchronized wireless communication. The revolutionary pacemaker, which recently received FDA clearance, consists of two small AAA battery– size capsules that are inserted directly into the heart during a minimally invasive procedure after which patients can return home the same day. "This is truly a breakthrough with a technological advancement that's like the difference between dial-up internet and high-speed Wi-Fi," says Dr. Kim. "With a majority of patients having need for dual chamber control, and the increased longevity this new technology affords clinicians, more and younger patients will benefit from this game-changing device." In a dual role, Helleland also serves as the chief executive for the Orange County/High Desert service area, a region that is part of Providence's Southern Division. In his role as chief executive of Providence St. Joseph, Helleland oversees the clinical operations, nursing and ancillary services for the 463-bed hospital and its 3,100 caregivers and 1,100 provider medical staff. As chief executive for the Orange County/High Desert Service Area, Helleland oversees the operations and collaborates with chief executives at Providence Mission Hospital, Providence St. Jude Medical Center and Providence St. Mary Medical Center, in addition to his direct oversight of Providence St. Joseph. CONGRATULATIONS TO JANIS FEE, MD, BOARD-CERTIFIED OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNECOLOGIST, who is the sixth Southern California OB-GYN to complete 1,000 Intuitive da Vinci robotics surgeries and the second female surgeon to hit this prestigious milestone. Dr. Fee is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG) and is accredited as a Surgeon of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. Health Briefs THE KIDNEY TRANSPLANT CENTER AT PROVIDENCE ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL NAMED THE NO. 1 KIDNEY TRANSPLANT CENTER IN CALIFORNIA. Providence St. Joseph is the top-rated kidney transplant facility in California according to a recently published report from the industry-leading Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), a national database of transplant statistics. The annual list identifies the highest-performing centers based on access to transplants and one-year post-transplant survival, among other factors. Providence St. Joseph Hospital's Kidney Transplant Center has the highest survival rate—in the 97th percentile—among the 21 kidney transplant centers in the state. WOMEN'S SERVICES RECEIVED THE JOINT COMMISSION'S GOLD SEAL OF APPROVAL FOR ADVANCED CERTIFICATION IN PERINATAL CARE. Providence St. Joseph is one of just 20 hospitals nationwide to receive the certification, which represents the highest national standards for safety and quality of care for mothers and babies. Dr. Kolski, director of the structural heart program at Providence St. Joseph, co-authored an article published in the Nov. 28, 2023, Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA) entitled "Early Utilization of Mechanical Circulatory Support in Acute Myocardial Infarction Complicated by Cardiogenic Shock: The National Cardiogenic Shock Initiative."
