2 | Health Matters: Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center Letter to the Community F or nearly 80 years, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center has been providing compassionate, personalized, high- quality care with a dedication to meeting the health care needs of our local community. Since our founding, we have always believed that you should be able to get leading-edge care close to home. This is why we are so honored that Providence Saint Joseph was named a Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World Report and recognized for clinical excellence in 12 specialties, including maternity services, neurology and neurosurgery, and urology—all of which you will read more about in this issue of Health Matters. In addition to those accolades, Providence Saint Joseph received a Healthgrades award for Patient Safety Excellence for the second year in a row, as well as our tenth consecutive five- star rating for the treatment of sepsis. Another recent accomplishment is the acquisition of a new robotic device that allows for minimally invasive lung biopsies. This new technology allows physicians to obtain tissue samples from deep within the lung and detect cancer at its earliest stages. This is big news not only for our medical center but for our patients as well. You will read more about this incredible technology on page 7. These achievements would not be possible without the dedication of our 2,100 caregivers, many of whom have been with us for decades. We recently asked some of our long-term caregivers what they think is special about Providence Saint Joseph. The answers were as unique as each individual, but they all followed a common theme: Our caregivers say they treat each other and our patients as if they were family. I hope this issue of Health Matters provides you with a glimpse of the extraordinary care that can be found here and provides a level of comfort, knowing that no matter the health need, we're prepared and honored to care for you just as we would a member of our own family. Karl Keeler, Chief Executive Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center
