2 | Health Matters: Providence Little Company of Mary San Pedro and Torrance Garry Olney, Chief Executive Providence Little Company of Mary San Pedro and Torrance Letter to the Community E very day, I am inspired by our caregivers and medical staff at Providence Little Company of Mary, who go to great lengths to care for our community and continue the healing legacy of the Sisters of Providence who founded us more than a century ago. Out of these efforts comes a seemingly endless series of stories about the compassionate and world-class care that is provided by our caregivers to patients and the community. In this issue of Health Matters you'll find a few of these inspiring stories, demonstrating how the exceptional care at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers San Pedro and Torrance continually saves lives. On page 4, meet Annie Noguchi and her husband, Brian, both teachers. Annie's sudden and rare cardiac arrest nearly proved fatal, but with the quick response of our care teams, we saved her life. Her care began with our highly skilled doctors and clinicians in the emergency department at Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance. Annie was stabilized there and then transferred to the ICU and later the progressive care unit, where she had a full recovery. Another story of a life our medical center impacted is on page 6. Meet Barb Kerr, who had a persistent tremor in her hands and neck that affected her quality of life. Her condition caused her to become socially isolated, unwilling to go out in public with her uncontrolled trembling. That was before she met with the caring and compassionate doctors at the movement disorders program of the Pacific Neuroscience Institute, an affiliate of Providence Little Company of Mary and one of only a small number of facilities in the country designated as a Level 1 Comprehensive Stroke Center (the highest level). After surgery, Barb was able to regain a normal life. On page 8 you'll find heartwarming comments from four new moms regarding the world-class care they received at Providence Little Company of Mary 's maternity center. We are the only hospital in the South Bay that provides comprehensive services that includes a doula and midwifery program that ensure expectant mothers get the caring, compassionate support they need before, during and after delivery. In closing, on page 10, read about our excellent weight-loss (bariatric) programs and the life-changing results patients have experienced. Thank you for taking a moment to review this edition of Health Matters and learn more about our outstanding services. We are committed to providing you with compassionate, individually focused care. Being recognized for a fifth consecutive year by Newsweek's annual list of the World's Best Hospitals is a testament to the tireless work of our physicians and caregivers in providing our patients and community with world-class care, and I am humbled by this tremendous distinction. It is an honor to serve our community, and I hope you enjoy this latest issue. Take care and stay well,
