10 | Health Matters: Providence St. Joseph Hospital
"What I appreciate about hiking is that it's an activity just about anyone
can do. Hiking only requires putting one foot in front of the other, yet
the journey ahead can bring about an unbridled taste of nature," says
Nikita Bezrukov, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and hiking enthusiast with
Providence St. Joseph Hospital.
Hiking boasts all kinds of benefits. For instance, it's a great cardio
workout. Depending on the trail you choose, your hike can be an easy,
moderate or intense workout. "I hike for the journey," says Dr. Bezrukov.
"I enjoy pushing myself past my limits to see what this body is made of."
Another benefit of hiking is the potential restorative and stress-relieving
powers of being outside in nature. A number of small studies hint that
spending time in green space—nature preserves and parks—may ease
your stress levels. And hiking is just what this doctor prescribes, says
Dr. Bezrukov with a laugh. "Hiking side effects include balance, stress
relief, promotion of well-being and general awesomeness."
But more than anything, hiking is about getting out into nature and
enjoying yourself. "Whether you're hiking for the exhilaration, endorphins
or connection with nature," he advises, "just make sure you take the time
in life to explore undiscovered trails."
