8 | Health Matters: Providence Saint John's Health Center oncoplastic surgery and IORT, and Parvin Peddi, MD, the new director of breast medical oncology who has special expertise in breast oncology. Dr. Peddi also heads up many of the breast center's clinical trials, such as one that will look at new drug combinations to treat triple-negative breast cancer. The breast center also offers convenient scheduling with a multidisciplinary team of experts—surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist and, if applicable, geneticist—all in one day. "For most patients, there is a sense of relief once they have had the opportunity to hear from all the different physicians and get an overview of what their treatment plan will be moving forward," says Dr. Grumley. Andreani was impressed by how organized and informative the multidisciplinary team was—in particular, how the nurse navigator, Rachelle Park, and Dr. Grumley prepared her for her surgery. "Dr. Grumley and her team couldn't have done a better job at making me feel informed and comfortable," says Andreani. Today, Andreani enjoys life as an active community leader. Formerly the chair of the Manhattan Beach Planning Commission, she is currently on the boards of the Manhattan Beach Historical Society and the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden. She urges women to have regular mammograms. In all three of her bouts with breast cancer, the tumors were not palpable. "Over the past 29 years, I've definitely benefited from being a patient at the Margie Peterson Breast Center," she says. THE BREAST SURGICAL ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Part of the Providence Saint John's commitment to excellence involves training the next generation of breast surgeons. Established in 1999, the Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the Margie Petersen Breast Center is a multidisciplinary program that provides one fellow each year with real-world experience in breast cancer care and the treatment of benign breast disease. After taking a brief hiatus, the program has been reestablished and expanded. Fellows will be trained in specialized surgical techniques such as breast-conserving oncoplastic surgery and intraoperative radiation therapy. "Most fellowship programs across the country don't train surgeons in these techniques," says Janie Grumley, MD, director of the Comprehensive Breast Program at the Margie Petersen Breast Center and professor of surgery at Saint John's Cancer Institute. "Fellows will also gain a good understanding of medical and radiation oncology, genetics and supportive services, which are things outside their general surgery training that allow a breast surgeon to be a specialist." The Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship builds on the breast center 's history of training the next generation of clinical and research leaders in breast cancer care. This multidisciplinary program will provide real- world training and experience to one selected graduate each year. The program has just matched its first fellow, who will begin training in August 2023.
