2 | Health Matters: Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center Letter to the Community W e enter the new year with so much hope and anticipation at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center as our new campus is starting to take shape. I'll never get used to the excitement I feel when I head west on the 101 Freeway and see our new Friese Family Patient Tower. I am happy to report we remain on schedule to open the Friese Tower in January 2023! In the past few months, we've celebrated some firsts as we expand our technology to provide improved outcomes for our patients. Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana was the first hospital in the San Fernando Valley or the surrounding communities to perform Aquablation, a minimally invasive and effective therapy to treat enlarged prostate without the side effects of other types of treatment. At about the same time, we also became the first in the Valley to perform a robotic thymectomy, the surgical removal of the thymus gland, located just under the breastbone. Historically, the procedure involved creating a large incision. A newer method of removing the thymus is robotic surgery, using the da Vinci Surgical System. This technology gives surgeons much better access to the thymus and more precise control while shortening recovery time. Providence Cedars-Sinai remains nationally recognized by Healthgrades, a leading consumer website, for numerous specialties and earned 2022 awards for treatment of heart failure, hip fracture and sepsis, as well as for colorectal surgeries. The prestigious U.S. News & World Report annual review again named our hospital among the Best Regional Hospitals and included our work in diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, and pulmonology on its lists of high- performing specialties. Our high-performing procedures included colon cancer surgery, treatment of congestive heart failure, heart attack, COPD, pneumonia and kidney failure. To have such success during an unprecedented health crisis, compounded by the complexities of major construction, is gratifying. I am so impressed by the way our hospital family pulled together at every level to care for patients and their loved ones—how we have expanded critical care facilities, how the staff constantly cleans and sterilizes, how we seek innovative therapies and more. I am happy to share that we were able to provide financial bonuses for our staff to thank them for the work they did in the face of the unimaginable. Finally, I feel so fortunate to work among such committed caregivers and express my heartfelt gratitude to them for providing compassionate and excellent care. I'd also like to thank you, the community, for the support and trust you've placed in Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center as we continue to navigate through the COVID pandemic. Nick Lymberopoulos, Chief Executive Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center
