2 | Health Matters: Providence Little Company of Mary San Pedro and Torrance Letter to the Community I n this issue of Health Matters, we reflect on our caregivers, who are charged with responding to all the health needs of our community—both planned and unplanned. As an example of "unplanned," please read the dramatic and inspiring story on page 4 about a local man who was enjoying his passion for surfing when things went very wrong. He nearly drowned, suffering a cardiac arrest before being rescued and rushed to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center. We had the privilege of caring for this young man and bringing him back to life. He walked out of our hospital only five days later. The story is a reminder that our emergency departments at both our San Pedro and Torrance hospitals are here for you day or night, with a talented ED staff and a broad roster of multidisciplinary specialists standing by. Also in this issue, we are pleased to update you on some of the services we provide to patients with serious, ongoing health conditions. On page 6, read about our outstanding movement disorders program. We are affiliated with Pacific Neuroscience Institute, whose South Bay offices provide Providence patients with the best neurological care on the West Coast. On page 8, we have a story on a patient who required complex spine surgery and the many innovative options for treating spine problems. We are proud of all our specialists who are experts and leaders in their field. On page 10, we detail our relationship with Keck Medicine of USC and how expert cardiovascular and cardiac surgical care is offered right here in the South Bay. This provides the best of both worlds for our patients, with academic medicine being delivered in a community setting. We also describe some of the latest treatments for brain tumors (page 11). Patients seeking care for brain tumors require the highest level of technology and coordination by a team of specialists, and at Providence Little Company of Mary they will find the expertise they need. Thank you for spending a little time today to read our publication and become familiar with our services. In short, we are there for you at any time and for any medical need. Take care and stay well, Garry Olney, Chief Executive Providence Little Company of Mary San Pedro and Torrance
