Health Matters: Providence St. Mary Medical Center | 3 Epic Upgrade Managing and keeping track of your care is now easier than ever. W idely considered the best electronic health record system available, Epic was recently implemented by Providence St. Mary Medical Center, leading to healthier outcomes and increased interactions between patients and providers. Since the transition, this innovative platform has not only greatly improved the hospital's efficiency in delivering care—it has also made it easier than ever for patients to manage their care. MyChart, a popular component of Epic, is an easy-to-use tool that allows patients to access all their medical information online, contact doctors with a question, schedule an appointment and much more. Dr. Kang Hsu, Providence's acute care chief medical informatics officer, oversaw the transition to Epic at Providence St. Mary. He says he personally takes advantage of MyChart to schedule doctor appointments, access test results and look at health data, all through his phone. "MyChart saves time and keeps me up to date on my health care. I believe MyChart also helps by digitizing and improving the physician-patient relationship." Another physician who helped implement Epic at the hospital is Dr. Franz Bolowich, assistant medical director of emergency services at Providence St. Mary. Dr. Bolowich says the transition to MyChart was smooth, thanks to hospital staff and providers receiving such thorough training. With this new system, providers are now able to go back into old medical records and review prior history and workups with one click. And patients can use MyChart to follow their care in real time and easily obtain their records. Dr. Bolowich says the biggest benefit to patients he's seen is that they 're more informed and more involved in their health care. "I also have noticed that patients are better able to communicate with their providers," he explains. Both physicians highly encourage all patients to take advantage of this amazing tool. The app is easy to download in your app store and is available in several languages. Should you have any questions, simply ask your provider for help. They will be happy to give you a demonstration. To get started using MyChart for all your patient needs, go to providence.org/lp/ mychart-signup.
