Orange County has been home to large
immigrant populations for generations. Many
of these immigrants live in households that
are considered "linguistically isolated,"
defined as households in which no member
age 14 or older speaks only English or speaks
English at least "very well."
Not surprisingly, areas with high levels of
linguistic isolation tend to be neighborhoods
with more immigrants—and likely more
recently-arrived immigrants. Such areas
include Anaheim, Santa Ana, Garden Grove,
Buena Park, and Westminster. In Orange
County, 8 percent of households are
linguistically isolated.
