Medications to Avoid Before and After Surgery Unless
Directed by Your Orthopedic Surgeon:
1. Aspirin medications:
Bufferin, Ascriptin, Ecotrin, codeine with aspirin, Fiorinal, Darvon, Percodan
2. Anti-inflammatory medications:
Motrin, Nuprin, Advil, ibuprofen, Indomethacin, Orudis, Aleve
Check with your orthopedic physician regarding prescription medications.
3. Anti-clotting medications:
Coumadin, heparin, Persantine, Plavix, aspirin (for medical treatment), Xarelto,
Eliquis, Lorenox
Check with your prescribing physician and your orthopedic physician when to
stop and resume.
4. Dietary supplements that contain:
Ginger, licorice, valerian, goldenseal, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, Siberian ginseng, St.
John's wort, alfalfa, Echinacea
Examples of medications that can be taken include: Tylenol, Vicodin.
If you have specific questions regarding these medications, speak with your physician.
Failure to discontinue some medications as instructed may result in rescheduling your surgery.
If you have a cardiac stent, do not stop taking your medications to prevent clots without first
talking to the provider who put in the stent. Make sure you have a plan to restart the
medication also.
