Rex Hoffman, M.D., named Providence Holy Cross chief medical officer

January 8, 2019

Radiation oncologist Rex Hoffman, M.D., who helped establish the San Fernando Valley’s only comprehensive cancer center, will take the reins this week as chief medical officer of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.

After a nation-wide search, Dr. Hoffman was selected to serve as the Mission Hills hospital’s administrative leader of the 680-member medical staff.

“Rex Hoffman is so well respected across our organization where he has held regional and system-wide leadership roles to advance cancer care across the seven-state Providence St. Joseph Health organization,” said Bernard Klein, M.D., chief executive, Providence Holy Cross. “He is patient-centered and focused on continuously improving care through collaboration, empowering physicians and education.”

Dr. Hoffman leaves his role as medical director of radiation oncology at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Burbank’s Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

He was instrumental in bringing leading-edge diagnostics and treatment technology to the center and creating a program that meets the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of cancer patients. He also served as physician lead for the PSJH Southern California Region Oncology Advisory Council for the past year and co-chairman of the health system’s Cancer Leadership Council for the past three years.

As CMO, he hopes to continue in that collaborative role, working closely with Holy Cross physicians and his counterparts at Providence Saint Joseph and Providence Tarzana medical centers. Dr. Hoffman has been on the staff at all three medical centers.

“I have always been a fan of the culture at Holy Cross” he said. “The relationship between the employees and the senior leadership team there seems to be one of support and mutual respect. This sense of cohesiveness coupled with the timing of this opportunity seemed like a good fit for me at this point in my career.”

He takes this new leadership role at a time when the health care industry is implementing vast changes to meet the needs of consumers.

“The center of my focus in this new role will be to ensure our patients receive the best care possible,” he said. “I plan to work closely with physicians and other providers to give them the tools they need to provide such care.”

Dr. Hoffman graduated Tulane Medical School and completed a radiation oncology residency at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. He recently earned an MBA in the Business of Medicine at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. He is an assistant clinical professor with City of Hope, which partners with Holy Cross to provide nationally recognized cancer care in the community.

“As a practicing radiation oncologist within Providence for the past 17 years and my recent roles as a physician leader in oncology, I’m excited about working closely with all of the oncologists at Holy Cross including those affiliated with City of Hope, Facey Medical Group and other medical groups,” he said.

Dr. Hoffman and his wife Yael have a young son and daughter. In his spare time he relishes family time, wine-tasting, hiking and following the Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota Vikings.
