Providence Tarzana Medical Center Earns Healthgrades’ Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence

January 23, 2018

Providence Tarzana Medical Center was recognized today among the top 5 percent of hospitals across the nation for quality patient outcomes. Providence Tarzana Medical Center earned Healthgrades’Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for the fifth straight year. Healthgrades is a leading online consumer resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Healthgrades recognized 250 hospitals nationwide for quality, including 46 hospitals in California and 10 in Los Angeles County. The distinction places these hospitals in the top 5 percent for excellence of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for excellence.

“Providence Tarzana is raising the standard for excellence in health care in our community and throughout the valley,” Dale Surowitz, chief executive for Providence Tarzana Medical Center. “Consistent quality is the result of hard-working, dedicated and passionate patient care teams and their commitment to safety and bedside care. We can visualize the future of healthcare in our community, and we’re working towards it by investing more than $540 million to build a new, state-of-the-art campus. All private rooms and a new Emergency Department, will be part of the major redevelopment of the medical center campus to better serve patients close to home.”

From 2014-16, patients who underwent treatment involving 19 procedures and conditions in hospitals receiving the Distinguished Hospital Award had, on average, a 26.3 percent lower risk of dying than if treated in hospitals that did not achieve this distinction. During this same period, if all other hospitals, as a group, performed at the level of these distinguished hospitals across the select 19 procedures and conditions, on average 159,924 lives could potentially have been saved.  For example, patients treated for respiratory failure at a top quality hospital had, on average, a 24.5 percent lower risk of dying than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction.

“We commend hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades 2018 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to high quality care for their patients,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., Healthgrades’ chief medical officer. “Hospitals that meet these high-quality standards will continue to distinguish themselves with consumers making decisions about where to receive care.”

Recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2018 study period (2014-2016), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
