Mission Hospital announced today that it will break ground in January to build a new, comprehensive cancer center. The center is scheduled to open in the summer of 2019. It will be housed in a dedicated 104,000-square-foot facility located directly across the street from Mission Hospital on Medical Center Road. Mission Hospital Foundation will partner with our community to raise $40 million in philanthropy to support critical technology, patient-centered programs and clinical service expansion.
“Mission Hospital has provided a broad range of sophisticated clinical and preventative health care services, defined by clinical excellence and compassionate care to the greater south Orange County for more than 45 years,” said Tarek Salaway, chief executive of Mission Hospital. “We are embarking on a $40 million campaign to provide a comprehensive cancer institute that brings together our talented physicians and clinicians with a focus on innovative technology, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic patient care, dedicated research, genomics, education and prevention programs to meet vitally important medical needs and whole-person care of our community.”
“This type of incredible innovation and development requires extraordinary philanthropic support from our community,” said Margarita Solazzo, chair of the Mission Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. “We must have the philanthropic support to bring this remarkable level of patient-centered care to south Orange County.
The four-story facility will include extensive medical office space for physicians dedicated to care for patients with cancer and other specialty needs, and it will also have its own parking structure. The Mission Hospital cancer center will be located across the street from the hospital, next to the Shops at Mission Viejo. The new center, an essential component of the cancer institute, is part of a real estate transaction that was signed last week with development partners, NCA and Welltower.

The Mission Hospital cancer center will complement and expand Mission’s excellent oncology nursing and inpatient clinical services with a collaborative multi-disciplinary approach to treatment, based on the clinical research and evidence based practice, personalized to each patient’s specific tumor and type of cancer. Services provided at the new institute include radiation oncology, imaging, medical oncology (infusion), nurse navigation, genomic counseling, clinical trials, psycho-social services, clinical pharmacy and laboratory facilities and more.
