Mission Hospital is pleased to announce it has received the prestigious 5-Star rating award—the highest possible score—for Quality of Care by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), according to the December 2017 report by Medicare.gov on the Hospital Compare site. Mission Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Orange County to receive a 5-star rating.

The ratings published by CMS are designed to help consumers make more informed decisions by comparing hospitals evaluating safety, clinical quality and patient experiences at more than 4,000 hospitals nationwide. Mission Hospital was one of only 337 hospitals in the United States, and one of only two hospitals in Orange County, to receive the Five-Star rating for 2017. The national average for hospitals is three out of five stars.

The Star Ratings Program is one of CMS's initiatives to rate and improve health care quality and make it relatable to consumers. The CMS Hospital Compare report includes information on over 100 quality measures nationwide. The Overall Star Rating Report summarizes information in a way that is useful and easy to interpret for patients and consumers. Consistent with other star rating programs, the methodology assigns each hospital between one and five stars, reflecting the hospital’s overall performance on select quality measures.
Mission Hospital’s performance and overall rating is based on a cumulative score across seven different areas, including mortality, readmission, safety of care, patient experience using the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, efficient use of medical imaging, and timeliness and effectiveness of care.
